description:
Joyce Elaine McKorn (formerly Hagen) was born on January 22, 1955 in Oregon, Illinois. Her father was a welder and worked at one of the Quaker Oats factories and her mother was a housewife. She had one older sister and two younger sisters, but one of her younger sisters died as a toddler in a tragic accident. Joyce attended the local elementary school and junior high in Oregon, then her family moved to Dixon, Illinois and Joyce completed her junior and senior years of high school there, graduating in 1969. Following her high school graduation, Joyce attended one semester of Soc Valley College where she studied nursing. In February 1970, Joyce enlisted in the United States Navy. She went to Bainbridge, Maryland for basic training. Her parents were supportive of her decision to be in the military despite it being during the Vietnam War. Following basic, she went to Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Illinois. After finished Hospital Corps training, she was assigned to the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, California. There, she worked in the emergency room logging information about incoming and outgoing patients. She also worked in the OB-GYN clinic at the hospital. She remained at this station for the rest of her service, receiving her discharge in July 1972. After her discharge, she used the GI Bill to go to Arizona Western College, getting an RN nursing degree. When she left the service McKorn had reached the rank of petty officer 3rd class, hospital corpsman, and for her service she was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
