description:
Mary Louise Bondi (formerly Chester) was born on April 12, 1920 in Deep River, Iowa. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in October 1944, and her first station was the Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. At this time, Fitzsimmons was one of the largest military hospitals in the world and treated not only American troops, but also German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners who suffered from tuberculosis. Bondi’s second assignment was at the 183rd General Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. While on this assignment, she met her future husband Ray and they were married while still serving there. At one point, she also got a knee injury and had to take emergency leave. General Eisenhower also visited the hospital while she was stationed there. She was discharged from the Army Nurse Corps in 1948, and remained in contact with friends she made in the service. She’s also stayed involved with veteran’s organizations since then. When she was discharged, Bondi had reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant and been given the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
