description:
Sadie Grossman was born on March 18, 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943 and went to basic training at Daytona Beach, Florida. After training, she was stationed in the finance office at Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas with the 18th Company, 6th Regiment. She remained stationed there until her discharge from the Women’s Army Corps in 1945. After she and her sister, Sue Anne Grossman, were both discharged from the military, they were the first women veterans to apply for and receive a GI Bill business loan. With this loan, they opened a children’s wear store called the Sandy Sue Kiddie Shop in May 1946, which they ran for decades afterwards. When she left the service Grossman had reached the rank of sergeant, and for her service she was awarded a Women’s Army Corps Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
