description:
Rose L. Miller (formerly Landsman) was born on July 21, 1916 in Massena, New York to Rabbi Chiam and Maggie (Mollie) Rudnick Landsman. She graduated from the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in 1937 and continued working at the hospital until 1942. She entered the US Air Corps of Nursing and then volunteered to be a pioneer in flight nursing through the Army Air Corps, and spending the entirety of her service in the Pacific theater with 809 Squadron. She recalls that the nurses suffered from flying long periods of time, often flying 20 hours at a time with no food or sleep. The nurses were under constant pressure. The crew consisted of 1 nurse and 1 corpsman with anywhere between 35-40 patients on board their C54 plane. Rose said that the saying "flying by the seat of your pants" was true! They simply had to handle any situation the best they knew how. The flight nurses did not have access to penicillin, only aspirin and sometimes a few sedatives. Rose met and married her husband Gerald E. Miller while serving in February of 1945. They had three children: two boys and one girl. Rose was discharged from the military in 1945 and reentered civilian nursing in 1955, working for the next 20 years. Rose moved to Pine Plains, New York and worked as a relief supervisor for the Adventist Nursing Home for 9 years. Rose is a member of the WWII Flight Nurses Association and the American Legion. She was named the Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Parade in 2012 in Pine Plains. Rose passed away at the age of 96 on November 3, 2012. When she left the service Rose had reached the rank of 1st lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
