description:
This is the original, unedited interview audio. Anna E. Souter (born Hall, formerly Davis) was born on July 3, 1898 in Bay Head, New Jersey. She grew up with four younger brothers and one younger sister in New York City and Long Island. She graduated from Milton Academy in 1916, spent about a year at home, and enlisted in the Navy as a Yeoman (F) in September 1918. She chose to join because her father’s cousin, who was in the Pay Corps, suggested it and said he could process her. She had a friend join as well, with Souter filling in for an enlisted man and her friend filling in filling in for an officer. She was the only one of her family to enter the service. She worked in the 3rd Naval District Headquarters in New York in the dispersing office. There, she was in charge of reviewing and verifying the names and addresses of the 15,000 men in the 3rd Naval District for their monthly paychecks. She worked in this office for six months, receiving her discharge in March 1919 and returning home. She was restless to return because the war was ending, and there was a young man she knew was returning from France that she wanted to see again. They saw that young man quite often after they returned, and they were later married. After her first husband passed, she returned to school and got training in early childhood education, working in a nursery school for 14 years afterwards. When she left the service Souter had reached the rank of yeoman 2nd class, and for her service she was awarded a World War I Victory Medal. A summary but no transcript of this interview is currently available.
