Marine Corps
description:
Ethel Rose (Nace) was born in March 1924 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She was the second of four children. Both of her brothers served during World War II, and her father was a World War I veteran and railroad engineer. She graduated high school in 1941 and was in night school for a job in the lab at a steel mill, as during World War II it was considered a defense industry. She had to wait until she was 20 to enlist and joined the Marines in 1944. Both of her parents approved of the choice, her mother because she wouldn't be working in the lab where she was inhaling all sorts of fumes, and her father because he was a veteran himself. She was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for basic training. She became an aviation machinists’ mate and was stationed in Norman, Oklahoma, and later El Toro, California. When the war ended, she was assigned to “mothball” the planes and was not demobilized until December 1946. After the war, she attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania under the GI Bill where she majored in chemistry and minored in math. She went on to Penn State for a Masters degree in chemistry, but got married to a chemistry professor who'd be an Army medic in the Philippines before finishing her PhD. She had her first child in 1952 and eventually had 3 more. She worked part time translating French and German papers to English, as it was work she could do while at home raising her children. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
