description:
Part 2 of 2 in interview 3 of 3. In part two of this follow-up interview Cydnee Totzke continues to ask about topics initially discussed in Part 2 of the interview. First, she finishes the origin story of “Hot Lips,” her call sign for the all-women flight at her undergraduate pilot training. She also discusses her limited options later on in her career, and what opportunities emerged for her because of that. Discussing Jackie Cochran and the WASPs, she expresses frustration at how much attention is paid to them as the first women military aviators when they were not in the military and did not command anyone, compared to her generation of pilots who are almost invisible in the historical records of women in aviation. She and her cohort were among the first in the military to fill these pilot positions, command men and women alike, and to do so for a complete career. In 1978 she spoke at the Air Force Association National Convention, mostly discussing how to improve retention in the face of disillusionment with the military after the Vietnam War. She also made in appearance in a documentary produced by Disney that she can’t remember the title of, and on the Merv Griffin Show. As several museums have started digging into the history of women pilots of her era, Kathy has actively donated materials to many of them, especially the National Museum of the US Air Force and the National Air and Space Museum.
