description:
This is the original, unedited interview audio. Hazel Mae Pierce (formerly Beasley) was born on December 31, 1918 in Witt, Illinois. She enlisted in the Navy WAVES in May 1943 in part because her brother was already in the military, serving in the Army. After going through basic training at Smith College, she was assigned to various stations around California. These locations included Livermore, San Diego, Naval Air Station Santa Ana, Camp Kearney, and San Pedro. She taught troops to identify Japanese military ships and aircrafts at all of these stations, and she was officed in a large aircraft hangar. She received her discharge in July 1946 and married soon after, and the marriage lasted for 54 years. She had already earned her master’s degree by the time World War II started, so she got her PhD from the University of Nebraska after the war. When she left the service, Pierce had reached the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
