description:
Mary Jeanette Clayson was on June 27, 1923 in Long Beach, California. After high school, she attended the Los Angeles City College and Compton Junior College. She enlisted in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1944. She went to basic training at Camo LeJeune, North Carolina, where she remembers mess duty and blackouts they would have. After basic she was initially meant to go to El Toro, California, but the air station wasn’t ready for women yet, so she was sent to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California instead. She was then assigned to Camp Elliott, also in San Diego, where she repaired F-44s. Her final assignment was at El Toro, California with the Recreation Department. She was demobilized in March 1946 after the war ended, and returned to Compton Junior College and finished her studies. She then got a job with US Steel Corporation in Los Angeles, California, where she worked for 30 years as a statistician and microfilming records. When she left the Marine Corps, Clayson had reached the rank of corporal, and for her service she was awarded a Marine Corps Reserve Ribbon, Honorable Service Lapel Button, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
