description:
Jane Dunn was born on May 14, 1925 in Maxton, North Carolina. After high school, she got a degree in home economics from Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina and began working as a teacher. In 1953, while she was teaching in her hometown of Lumberton, North Carolina, her principal received information from the Army about bringing teachers to Germany, Italy, and parts of Asia. Both she and her sister went to Washington, DC for an interview and they were both accepted. They went by ship to Germany in 1954. Although at first she and her sister were meant to be separated, they convinced the Colonel to send them to Nuremberg together. They were treated like officers and could use Army hotel rates, so they traveled quite a bit, especially with many long weekends on their calendar. They were in Nuremberg about a year after the war crime trials had occurred, so their travels included the Hall of Justice the Trials were held in. She taught 6th grade Army children, and she found the class especially interesting since the students came from so many different backgrounds. She remembers one school trip where they visited Berlin, then went to the Dachau concentration camp, which she found quite depressing and moving, especially because it had not been cleaned up as much. There were still ash pits blood ditches in the camp. Because Nuremberg was so close to the Russian border, they had special instructions and drills for what to do if there was an evacuation. After staying there for a year, they returned to the United States in July 1955 on Military Air Transport, which got them to Fort Dix, and they got themselves the rest of the way home from there. A transcript of this interview is available.
