Mary “Hon” Evelyn Bjerke (formerly Kearns) was born on March 3, 1918 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She came from a military family, with two uncles who served in World War I and three brothers along with herself serving in World War II. One brother was a P-38 pilot who was killed in North Africa, and the other two were Navy Corpsman. She herself enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps Air Forces in 1943. She was first stationed at Stockton Air Force Base in Stockton, California. She was then moved to Mather Field in Sacramento, California. While at Mather Field she met her future husband, a veteran who worked with her at the hospital. Her last station was the Santa Ana Air Force Base in Santa Ana, California. Bjerke was medically retired in June 1945 after contracting scarlet fever and developing Rheumatic Fever. She and her husband had seven children, three of whom entered the service – a Colonel in the Air Force Nurse Corps, Major in the Marine Corps, and a Seabee Construction Mechanic with the Navy, as well as a son-in-law in the Air Force. Mary Bjerke left the service with the rank 2nd Lieutenant and had been awarded the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. She passed away on January 11, 2012.
