description:
Side 1 of 2. Alvina Clara Bowen (formerly Ford) was born on October 9, 1924 in Dayton, Ohio. In March of 1945, she enlisted in the Army Medical Corps and was sent to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia for basic training before being stationed at the Baxter General Hospital in Spokane, Washington. She fit in very well from the start of boot camp, immediately relating to the discipline and order of the military. Bowen remained in the Army Medical Corps until she was discharged in December 1945 after Word War II came to a close. Although she was in the military just short of a year, her time in the service made an indelible impact on the rest of her life. She also has a niece (Malinda Ford) who served for 12 years in the Marine Corps. When discharged, she had reached the rank of Sergeant, and she received a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
