description:
Velta E. Smythe (formerly Argue) was born on February 11, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was working at an office before deciding to enlist, joining alongside a friend she had at work. She enlisted in the Navy WAVES in March 1945 and went to basic training at Hunter College in New York. After completing basic training, she was stationed briefly at the Farragut Naval Station near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho before going to the Puget Sound Naval Yard in Bremerton, Washington. Much of her work was in separation as an assistant paymaster, processing the men coming through the station during demobilization. She left the service in September 1946 and reunited with her husband who was in the Army for most of World War II. When she left the service Smythe had reached the rank of yeoman 2nd class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. She passed away on March 8, 2011. A transcript of this interview is available.
