description:
I was seeing the world around me away from home. With an overwhelming sense of compassion for the destitute, disease ridden beggars of India. To the Naga tribe in the steaming jungle of Burma, to the rice paddies and villages of China, theirs was a different kind of war. Seeing the Great Ghandi in Bombay, meeting General Stillwell on the Ledo Road in Burma and then later General Chennault in Kunming, China, getting to know him and some of the Flying Tigers who were patients at our hospital, the 172nd General Hospital. There was a feeling of closeness and a feeling that in a small way I too was contributing. We were in China when the A-Bomb was dropped and the Chinese Nationalists and the Communists took up their war, so we headed home. With so many memories, some good, some sad. Goodbyes to new friends and last goodbyes to the nurses we lost in a plane crash who were buried in a camellia grove in Burma. My outlook on life, my priorities all were changed. Let the generations know that the women in uniform also guaranteed their freedom. That our resolve was as great as the brave men who stood among us, and with victory our hearts were just as full and beat just as fast. That the tears fell just as hard for those we left behind us - CBI
