subject:
Army Nurse Corps
description:
Doris L. Williams (formerly Coleman) was born on October 8, 1918 in Memphis, Tennessee. She was working as a nurse in St. Louis before joining the Army Nurse Corps when she was 26, hoping to become an anesthetist. Although she couldn’t remember exactly when she signed up, she remembers taking an entrance exam on the day that President Roosevelt died. She went to basic training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After training, she was stationed at a hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, likely at Fort Knox. There, she was in charge of an orthopedic ward that was not racially segregated. She served for 11 months, likely receiving her discharge in early 1946, and returned to her position in St. Louis. When she left the service Williams had reached the rank of 2nd lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. She passed away in December 2009. A transcript of this interview is available.
