subject:
Women's Army Corps (WAC)
description:
Caroline M. Crossland (formerly Argenti) was born on July 5, 1923 in Englewood, New Jersey. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps after her father left a newspaper on the table that asked women to enlist with a note that said, “I bet you can’t do this.” She immediately filled out the application, and within a week she was officially a WAC in March 1944. She went to basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and after 8 weeks there she was stationed at the Quartermaster Depot at Camp Shanks, New York with the Transportation Corps. There, she was responsible for checking supplies, storing materials, and managing monthly inventory. She served there until, in 1946, she took on an extra assignment and was shipped out to France. Other than the seasickness, she loved serving overseas and is very proud of her service. Crossland was discharged in 1946 and had reached the rank of private 1st class. For her service, she was awarded an Army Good Conduct Medal, Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
