description:
This is the original, unedited interview audio. Viola A. Kvartunas (formerly Miller) was born on August 3, 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in 1944 after her sister convinced her to join together, and she went to basic training together with her sister and cousin at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. They took aptitude tests at Fort Oglethorpe, and based on that Kvartunas was sent to the Ground Training Department at Love Field in Dallas, Texas. There she was part of Air Transport Command, helping fill out paperwork and assigning servicemen who were training and returning from combat. She was well-suited to this position since before the war she had worked at Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa. She was then sent to Morrison Field, Florida for class on flight traffic work, learning to be a stewardess. After this training, she worked as a stewardess on a flight to Hickam Field in Honolulu, Hawaii, which qualified her for overseas pay. In January 1946, she chose to leave the Army rather than re-up for the duration. She took advantage of the GI Bill to go to accounting school and worked as a bookkeeper all her life. She met her husband after the war, they married in November 1958, and had two sons together within a few years. When she left the service Kvartunas had reached the rank of corporal, and for her service she was awarded a Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
