description:
Mary Latona (formerly O’Brien) was born on March 2, 1917, and she worked as a civilian nurse until joining the Army Nurse Corps in July 1945. She went through training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and as they were driving to Dibble Army Hospital in Menlo Park, California they found out that World War II had ended. They met some friends along the way and celebrated before finishing their drive. While at Menlo Park, they treated returning POWs from Japan and other islands in the Pacific. When the Menlo Park hospital closed, patients were transferred to McCormack General Hospital in Pasadena, California, which was also the last place she served. Upon her discharge in January 1947 Latona had reached the rank of 2nd lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
