description:
Kimberly Miller was born in Fullerton, California on May 27, 1962. She moved around the country growing up, and attended the University of Kansas for two years before following her family back to California in 1981 and attending Palomar Junior College. Her sister called a recruiter so they could both join the Navy Reserves, and Kimberly joined through a delayed entry program in 1982. She went to recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina, and she happened to be in recruit training when the Equal Rights Amendment was defeated. After recruit training, she went to the Defense Information School to become a print journalist, which she completed in November of 1982. She was then sent to the Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, California. She married her husband who was also a Marine in 1984, and in 1985 she went to the 9th Marine Corps District in Shawnee, Kansas, where she worked for three and a half more years. She was then sent to the San Diego, California Recruitment Depot in 1988. In 1989, she attended a program that would help her get college degree after finishing Officer Candidate School, completing her degree in journalism and constitutional law at San Diego State University in 1991 and continuing with the Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant. She then went to Basics School and worked as a media officer at Headquarters Marine Corps in 1992. She was stationed in Okinawa, Japan starting in July 1995, and while she was there a rape case involving several US military members (two of whom were Marines) who were convicted and sentenced for six and a half to seven years greatly changed operations of the Marines on the island, including a stop on artillery firing in training, and led to many Japanese people in the area keeping Marines at a distance. She also went out to China and Korea while stationed in Okinawa before returning to the US in 1998. She was assigned to the 1st Marine Division in 1999, and went to Cairo, Egypt for the Brightstar exercise that involves 11 countries. She then took over at the Recruit Depot in San Diego in 2001 when the director was unexpectedly brought to another position, a position she still held at the time of the interview. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
