Navy WAVES
description:
This is the original, unedited interview audio. Lida C. Montgomery (formerly Chatfield) was born on August 4, 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She went to College Hill School and graduated from a private high school, and attended the University of Cincinnati for two years. She left college early because she felt that, with the United States joining World War II her freshman year, there were more important things to be doing. She married her husband after leaving school, and enlisted in the Navy WAVES in November 1943. She chose the WAVES because her family had a history of Navy service, and because she had spoken to WAVES who had already joined, and they described the service positively. She went to Hunter College in New York for basic training in January 1944. After six weeks there, she was assigned to the Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, Virginia and was attached to communications in the Registered Publication Issuing Office. She remained at this station for the entirety of her service, receiving her discharge from Washington, DC in January 1946. She considered staying in longer, but thought that she had spent long enough away from home that she owed it to her family to go back. She initially tried to get a job but didn’t have any luck, so she went back to school on the GI Bill and met and married her husband while attending the University of Cincinnati. When she left the service Montgomery had reached the rank of specialist communications 3rd class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
