Danielle Green was born on January 9, 1977 and grew up in Chicago, where she was in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps in high school. She received a basketball scholarship to Notre Dame, where she graduated with a degree in psychology in 2003. She left for basic training and was assigned to the 571st MP Company in Fort Lewis, Washington (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord). She was then sent to Iraq in 2003. On May 25, 2004, while she was acting as security on the rooftop of a police station in Baghdad, the building in front of her was blown up. While she was looking around to find the source of the rocket that was fired, another RPG was fired in her direction on the rooftop of the police station. This attack completely removed her left hand, an injury she was recovering from back in the States when this interview was conducted. Her platoon sergeant and platoon leader made sure to recover her wedding rings from the rooftop before she was sent to Germany and the US for treatment, which Green was grateful for. Reflecting on her time in the Army, she never felt unwelcome in the MP company, and although before leaving for Iraq she was incredibly worried and scared that something would happen, she doesn't regret her experience at all and thinks that even if she knew about her injury when she signed up, she still would have done it.
