description:
Side 2 of 2. Kimberley Christina Anderson (formerly Hensrud) was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on January 20, 1969. Her family consisted of her parents, one younger sister, and one younger brother. No one in Kimberley's immediate family served in the military. Joining the military was a financial decision for Kimberley, who was a single mom hoping to attend college. Kimberley’s daughter Sydney was born in August 1987, just as Kimberley was graduating high school, and she enlisted in the Army in October 1988. Her basic training took place at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Training was a culture shock for Kimberley, who said she entered basic training as a naïve little girl with an attitude but left disciplined and empowered. Yet there were many negative aspects of both basic training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training) school. Kimberley encountered many negative stereotypes (“you were either a slut or gay”), harmful amounts drinking and smoking, and other recruits so desperate to leave the service they risked their own lives to be sent to the psych ward. Kimberley was also raped by a fellow serviceman, which she reported to her doctor. Kimberley decided not to go active duty because she was afraid of leaving her daughter parentless. She instead became an active reservist in the 477th Medical Company serving as a lab technician. Unfortunately, Kimberley’s unit was disbanded and despite fighting through the “red tape,” the military only paid about $2,000 of Kimberley’s college tuition. Kimberley left the military in October of 1997 with the rank if Private First Class, and served in Grand Forks, North Dakota for her whole military career. She finished paying her student loans in 2004. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
