Navy WAVES
description:
Lois Margaret Augustad (formerly Ostrom) was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 10th, 1921. Before joining the WAVES, Lois had been working as a comptometer operator for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1944, she enlisted in the Navy WAVES with a best girlfriend because both of them hoped they could do something to help. Lois went to Hunter’s College in New York for basic training, which she greatly enjoyed. She and her friend then both went to Yeoman school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There she learned how the Navy functioned, and how to do office work. Once she finished Yeoman school, she was sent to San Diego. Lois lived in barracks, ate in the mess hall, always wore uniforms, and performed typing work during the day. It felt to her like working a regular 9 to 5, just in a Navy uniform. Lois served from January 25th, 1944 to March 2nd, 1946. After she was discharged, Lois moved back to Omaha to live with her family and worked in a civil service job at the Navy Department. She met her future husband there, and the two of them spent most of their lives in Omaha. Lois had one daughter and stayed home to raise her. Eventually, they moved to Virginia for her husband’s job. Lois’s daughter lives close by in Centerville with her husband and her two sons. When she left the service, Lois had the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class and had been awarded the American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is available.
