description:
Genevie T.K. Eisenhower was born on August 11, 1920 in Harper County, Kansas. She enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1943 and graduated from air evacuation school in 1944. As an Army Air Force Nurse, she was stationed with the 4th Ferrying Group in Memphis, Tennessee. While there, she was one of two nurses working during the first use of a portable iron lung, moving a polio patient from Panama to Indianapolis, Indiana. From there, she was stationed at Hickam Field in O’ahu, Hawaii with the Medical Air Evac 830th squadron. She remembers one flight she was on that had patients who were POWs from the Philippines and Japan returning to Hickam on Christmas Eve. The aircraft had a problem, and hey had to circle back to the island they took off from twice before they made it. One of the patients was a member of Fred Waring’s choir, so he started singing Christmas carols. Unfortunately for all involved, this meant he sang carols for eleven hours, exhausting himself and the others on the flight. Eisenhower was discharged in 1946, having reached the rank of captain. For her service, she was awarded an Army Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Eisenhower passed away in June 2010.
