Navy WAVES
description:
Side 2 of 2. Lyla R. Woodworth (formerly Guyer) was born on January 6, 1923 in Stratton, Nebraska. She was introduced to the Navy WAVES and sent them a letter when she was 19. She left college and worked for her dad until her official enlistment in March 1943. She went to Dew Moines, Iowa for a physical before reporting to Hunter College in New York for basic training. She was assigned to the 2nd regiment, and was able to meet up with her aunt who was living in Brooklyn at the time. After her placement interview, she was stationed in Washington, DC working in Naval communications. Part of this job included working with very secret Japanese messages, as well as helping organize a weekly speaker series and the President’s Birthday Ball. She was also the president of the Service Men/Women’s Christian League. Her sisters were able to visit her in DC, and she remembers regularly receiving letters, recipes, and packages from home, which included cookies her grandma made for her. She remained at the Naval Communications Annex in Washington, DC for the entirety of her service, receiving her discharge in December 1945. She married after the war ended, and they moved to Colorado where they started a family together. She worked as a music teacher at a private school there. When she left the service Woodworth had reached the rank of Specialist 1st Class in Communications (Q), and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
