description:
Alice “Whitey” Guidish (formerly Whitener) was born on July 8, 1922 in Olathe, Colorado and her family moved to Los Angeles, California in 1924 for her sister’s health. After graduating from Franklin High School, she went to work for Boeing in Seattle, Washington for a little while before returning to LA. She enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1943, and went to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for basic training at the very start of 1944. She spent four weeks doing mess duty and 4 weeks on motor transport, then was assigned to Quantico, Virginia where she drove cargo trucks and transported OCS Marines for field training. She was then transferred to San Diego for overseas training, then went to Oahu, Hawaii. While stationed there, she played on the softball team that had people from all services. When the war ended, she stayed in to close out her service in December 1945, returning to California on a hospital ship. She was discharged from El Toro, California on December 28, 1945. When she was discharged, Guidish had reached the rank of corporal, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
