Navy WAVES
description:
This is the edited interview audio. Nancy Pope Rice was born on June 8, 1908 in Columbus, South Carolina. She attended Winthrop College and was teaching at a university when she was contacted in 1941 by the US Navy asking her to apply for a commission with the Navy WAVES. Although her initial response was that she didn’t know anything about the Navy and wasn’t sure she was qualified, she went to an interview in Charleston, South Carolina and was sworn in about two weeks later. She went to Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts for two months of training, then received her first assignment to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, California as on officer of naval personnel in assembly and repair of aircrafts. Her assignment shifted, however, as a Captain had several civilian personnel resign and he put her in charge of incoming and outcoming mail from his office. Her husband, who she had met before World War II, wrote each other letters from the respective Naval stations throughout the war, and met back up in South Carolina after they were discharged, marrying in 1946. When she left the service in 1945 Rice had reached the rank of lieutenant, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
