description:
Side 2 of 2. Linda Marie Baeza (formerly Clark) was born on October 10, 1964 in Waterloo, Iowa. Growing up in a working-class community, Linda was raised thinking of the military as an economic opportunity to fund higher education. Her brother served in the Air Force and her grandfather had served during World War II, so Linda already had a few personal connections to the military. During her junior year of high school, Linda took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and scored very high. Because of her linguistic abilities, it was recommended that she go into Army special intelligence. After attending a sixty three-week language school program in California, Linda became an Arabic linguist with a specialization in Palestinian dialect. This program was followed by military intelligence school at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas, and then onto tactical intelligence school at Fort Stewart in Massachusetts. Linda had agreed to a 4-year enlistment contract, and by the time she had finished training and was ready for duty she had 18 months left. Despite all of her specialized education, Linda served in the 24th infantry as “basically a tank mechanic” for 11 months. One of the stories Linda recounts is the time the first sergeant—an “old cantankerous man”) who disapproved of women serving in the military—called her a young lady in front of her platoon, to which her platoon leader replied: “That is not a young lady, that is a young soldier.” Linda served from August 1983 to August 1987. No transcript of this interview is currently available.
