description:
Claire Moore (formerly D'Amico) was born on August 11, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey. Her father was a drummer in a band and a tailor, and her mother was a seamstress who, among other projects, made hand-sewn buttonholes for fireman and policeman uniforms. Claire graduated from high school at the age of 16 and went to work for Western Electric dismantling telephone booths. Knowing that there was more of the world to see, Claire decided to enlist in the Navy WAVES in November 1942. She went to boot camp at Hunter College in New York, and then she went to Storekeeper’s School in Milledgeville, Georgia. Upon completion of Storekeeper School, she was assigned to the Naval Station in Newport, Rhode Island where she served until her discharge in August 1945. Claire learned many of life's lessons while in the Navy: honesty, love of nation, and patriotism. She is a member of the American Legion and Waves National. When she left the service Moore had reached the rank of storekeeper 3rd class, and for her service she was awarded an American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
