creator:
Duckworth, Ladda "Tammy" (1968 March 12 -
subject:
Army Reserve | Army National Guard
description:
Ladda Tammy Duckworth grew up in a military family, moving around Southeast Asia as a child. She finished high school in Hawaii, went to University of Hawaii, and joined Army ROTC at George Washington University as a graduate student. She pursued aviation initially because it was one of two combat arm branches that were open to women at the time. In March 2004, she was first deployed overseas in Balad, Iraq, where she worked as Battle Captain and Assistant Operations Officer, which had her running day-to-day tactical operations. On November 12, 2004, while flying back towards Balad after finishing their missions for the day, a group of insurgents fired at the helicopter Lt. Col. Duckworth was in with small arms and RPGs. They were hit, amputating both of Duckworth's legs and nearly her right arm as well. Upon her return to the United States, she was promoted to Major and awarded a Purple Heart. She also testified to the Senate Veteran Affairs Committee about injured veterans seeking healthcare after their return to the States and as they transition to civilian life. Since this interview, then-Maj. Duckworth won a seat in the House of Representatives in 2006, in 2014 she retired from the Reserve Forces as a Lieutenant Colonel, and in 2016 she won her election to become a US Senator for Illinois. She served in the 106th AVN. A transcript of this interview is available.
