description:
Susan K. Sonnheim (formerly Robbins) was born on November 23, 1958 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She joined the Army National Guard in 1998 and was among those called to active duty and deployed overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was apart of the 32nd Military Police Company and stationed in Baghdad, Iraq. “On September 23, 2003, while on mission as a Military Policeman, SGT Sonnheim sustained a multitude of injuries from a configuration exposed in the middle of an intersection, not far from the Police Station where she worked. While on foot at a moderate pace, trailing behind the unknown embattled front consisting of four Iraqi Police, SGT Sonnheim noticed a box with a wire sticking out of it and alerted the IPs (Iraqi Police) to "RUN." "It's a bomb and it's going to blow." It was the type of explosion coming from an improvised explosive device wired and activated from a remote control or cell phone, causing scattering of hot shrapnel from the exploding shell. It severely injured SGT Sonnheim.” Sonnheim left the service in 2005 having reached the rank of sergeant, and for her service she was awarded a Purple Heart, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Global War on Terrorism Medal.
